Lavender Field Maternity Session
A few nights ago, we made the drive out to the most beautiful lavender field for an evening maternity session, and it ended up being such a wonderful evening. I’ll be 38 weeks tomorrow, and I wanted to capture what life looks like for us right now—waiting on baby boy number five, surrounded by the summer light, a sea of lavender, and our wild, sweet boys.
The farm was about an hour and a half away, and we went on a Sunday evening—not exactly ideal timing with a full week ahead. It’s the last week of school for our elementary schoolers, and our oldest is graduating elementary school this week, which makes everything feel especially full and emotional. To top it off, a couple of the kids weren’t feeling 100%, but the golden light, the breeze drifting through the lavender, and the soft hills behind us made it all feel worth it the moment we arrived.
We started with photos of just the boys, and they did so well. There were definitely a few typical sibling moments—some teasing, a little bickering here and there—but overall they were cooperative and full of love for each other. When things got a little tense between them, we gave them a break and I set up the tripod to take some self-portraits. It felt calm and really special. It also helped that my husband took the kids to get some water for a few minutes. When he got back, he took control of the shutter button and helped me get some of the more difficult angles, which was so wonderful. I finished up by photographing him with the kids and grabbing a few more shots of the boys on their own.
These are the kinds of images I treasure most—sunset family photos in a setting that already feels like summer in full bloom. As a Bay Area maternity photographer and mom, I know how important it is to carve out time to photograph our own families too. And this evening felt like a little gift before the next chapter begins.
I’ll be printing a few of these to hang in our home and tucking the rest away to look back on when life looks very different. It was a beautiful night, and the boys did amazingly. I’m so grateful we made the effort—it was exactly the kind of memory I want to hold on to.
If you’re expecting and dreaming of a maternity session in nature—sunset, soft light, wildflowers, or lavender fields—I’d love to help you plan it. Whether you’re in Alameda, the East Bay, or anywhere around the Bay Area, I’d be honored to document your family as it grows.
