Studio Self-Portraits — Documenting My Own Motherhood Story
As a photographer, I’m usually behind the camera, capturing the special moments of others. But during this pregnancy, I decided to step in front of the lens and document my own journey. With this being my fifth child, I felt it was important to not only capture the growth of our family but to celebrate this unique season of motherhood.
Why Self-Portraits Matter
Choosing to take these self-portraits was an intentional way to capture a personal moment of creativity. It allowed me to take full control of the process, from the concept to the execution, without needing to coordinate with anyone else. I wanted to create something that would feel timeless, and that could reflect the beauty of this moment in my life.
Self-portraiture also offers a flexibility that other sessions don’t — you can shoot when inspiration strikes, without needing to wait for external schedules. It allowed me to document my pregnancy in a way that felt right for me, focusing on details and emotions I wanted to preserve.
The Process & Style
For these portraits, I used my studio setup with strobes, creating soft yet powerful lighting that highlighted the curves of my pregnancy. The strobe setup allowed me to control the light precisely, ensuring the shadows were flattering and the tones were rich.
I kept the styling minimal, focusing on simple, elegant outfits and clean backgrounds to keep the attention on the subject — me. This minimalist approach is a hallmark of my style, and it allowed me to create portraits that felt both personal and timeless.
What I Learned or Felt
Shooting these images was a reminder of the importance of pausing and capturing the present. While I’m always focused on making others feel comfortable in front of the camera, being the subject myself offered a new perspective on the process. It reinforced the idea that these moments, even the small ones, are worth documenting.
Why You Should Step In the Frame
This experience reminded me of how important it is for mothers to be seen in photos, especially during moments that may feel vulnerable. Pregnancy is a transformative time, and I believe every mother deserves to have these moments captured, whether they’re feeling camera-ready or not.
When I work with clients, I aim to create a calm, intentional space where they can step into the frame and be celebrated for who they are, exactly as they are. A maternity session is a perfect opportunity to honor this phase of life, and I always encourage moms-to-be to embrace the experience.
Ready to Celebrate Your Own Journey?
If you’re considering a maternity session, I’d love to help you capture this special time in a meaningful way. You don’t need an elaborate setup — just a space where you can be seen and celebrated for the amazing transformation your body is going through.
